I was asleep, I had my alarm clock set for noon because we were gonna do something in the studio, some promo and when the alarm came on there was the radio and “Hold The Line” was playing. My mom called me up and said, “Turn on KLOS.” It was the song “Hold the Line,” and I started running around the house in my underwear, screaming, “I’m on the radio!” My wife was cracking up. I flipped the first time I heard myself on the radio. Two band members have talked about hearing their song on the radio for the very first time.Hold the Line peaked at #5 in the US and #14 in the UK.It featured on their debut 1978 eponymous album. Hold the Line was written by Toto’s keyboardist David Paich and was the band’s debut single.In 2009 Toto was into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. They have released 17 albums and sold over 40 million albums to date.After a brief hiatus in 2009, the band continues to tour today.The band went on to win five Grammy’s in the 70s and early 80s including three for the 1982 hit song Rosanna. While the band didn’t win the Best New Artist Grammy (that went to A Taste of Honey), the album did win the band a Producer of the Year Grammy.The band’s eponymous debut album, saw three charting singles, Hold the Line, I’ll Supply the Love and Georgy Porgy, and saw Toto nominated for the 1979 Best New Artist Grammy. ![]() The band signed to Columbia Records and immediately started work on their first album.Added to the initial mix were Jeff’s brother Steve Porcaro on keyboards, and singer Bobby Kimball. Bassist David Hungate was in Boz Scaggs’ band as did guitarist Steve Lukather. With drummer Jeff Porcaro, he formed a high school band named, Rural Still Life. Keyboardist David Paich wrote much of Boz Scaggs’ Silk Degrees album.Toto’s original members were session musicians who appeared on albums by such 70s stars as Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, Boz Scaggs, and Sonny and Cher.Formed in Los Angeles in 1977, Toto is another of the plethora of bands to rise from the 70s LA music scene.From the band that gave us the 80s smash-hits, Rosanna and Africa, comes the 70s hit, Hold the Line – Toto’s first single and a gold record in the US and Canada.
